The BMW M3 Challenge puts you behind the wheel of this awesome car, and you can give it a full-blown test drive on a professional racetrack. It has been developed and released by BMW as a shameless but fun promotional gimmick, and it is completely free to play. The file is almost 350MB in size, but it is surprisingly non-resource intensive.
The download and installation took forever, but I was impressed with the overall performance of the game. I could control the car with my keyboard or joystick, but gamers can use whatever accessories they like. I have no way of knowing how closely the game matches the performance characteristics of the actual car, but I was impressed nonetheless.
The game includes numerous camera views and display configurations, and the graphics are pretty good considering the 16 bit limitations that are in place. This is not the most advanced or feature-rich racing game out there today, but you can tell that a lot of design effort went into this program.
You can only drive one car around one track and there is no multi-player capability. You cannot upgrade or expand the program, and repeating the same scenario gets boring after a while. It would be nice if developers included some crashes, explosions or other effects that would kick this game up a notch or two. However, this is a creative way to promote a new car, and the program is stable and smooth.
Anyone who likes racing and BMW should try this game despite its limitations. It's a fun way to get behind the wheel and take it for a ride without causing any real damage or injury. Be prepared to wait for the download and installation process to finish due to the large file size, but removing the program is fast and easy.
